How can I keep my baby from getting my cold?'

Thanks for your question. There is no absolute way to prevent the common cold, which is caused by a number of different viruses. Children will get these colds because they are in frequent contact with each other and they have limited exposure to the viruses previously, so they are susceptible. Of course, some serious infections are prevented by immunizations. It is very important that your child’s immunizations are up to date. For the common cold the 2 best preventative methods are to keep your child’s immune system strong, and to prevent unnecessary contact with others with colds. The immune system is strongest when the child has enough rest and has good nutrition. For a 6-month-old breast milk is best for preventing infection. For preventing exposure to viruses good hand washing is the best technique. Both for the child and for those around them.
